Development of a Daycare

The community has been without a Daycare Facility for a number of years, and of course this has a very real, negative impact on our community; specifically on families with infants, and other pre-schoolers.

Our last daycare went out of operation more than five years ago because the building was condemned by both the Fire Marshall's Office and Department of Health. The closure has adversely affected parents, children, employers and the community, as noted above.

We had worked with the GN’s Department of Education, and to some degree Kakivak Association, on planning to renovate our Old Hamlet Office Building (where the Community Radio Station is currently located) as the community’s daycare. This planning was done by Concentric Engineering. However, Council recently decided that a new daycare (rather than a renovated daycare), more centrally located, will better serve the needs of the community, and so we will not proceed with the renovation option.

As such, we are currently working to revive the initiative in a ‘new build’ format.
