Welcome to Grise Fiord!

Grise Fiord, located on the southern tip of Ellesmere Island, is a small community with a population of about 150, however is certainly the most ‘vibrant’ community in Nunavut, Canada’s newest territory. We are a little place with a very big heart.

Our community lies 1,160 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, and is situated much closer to the North Pole than to southern Canada. We are the northernmost, permanently inhabited (or public) community Canada.

Grise Fiord, in Inuktitut, the Inuit langua.ge spoken in the central and eastern Canadian arctic, is known as Ausuittuq, or “the place that never thaws out”.

You’ll always find a very warm welcome here. Our homes are cozy, our public school is certainly the most unique and traditional in our territory, our health clinic is modern and well-equipped, and our grocery store is well-stocked.

Our RCMP detachment is the most northern I Canada, and we even feature a small hotel.

Walk around the community and you’ll be greeted by many of our 150 or so residents, most of which are Inuit.
